Associate Professor Dr. Serdar Sönmez completed his undergraduate degree in the Department of Biology at Balıkesir University from 2002 to 2006. In 2006, he was admitted to the Master’s program in Biology at the Institute of Science of the same university and completed his thesis titled “Ectinosomatidae (Crustacea: Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Fauna of the Turkish Mediterranean Coast” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Serdar Sak and Prof. Dr. Süphan Karaytuğ.
In 2009, Dr. Sönmez was accepted into the Ph.D. program in Biology at the Institute of Science, Balıkesir University, and in the same year, he was appointed as a research assistant in the Department of Biology at Adıyaman University. He completed his doctoral studies in 2014 with the thesis titled “Taxonomic Revision and Zoogeography of the Species of the Miraciidae (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida) Inhabiting the Mediolittoral Zone of Turkish Coasts,” supervised by Prof. Dr. Serdar Sak and Prof. Dr. Süphan Karaytuğ.
Dr. Sönmez, who earned the title of Associate Professor in 2019, has been serving at Adıyaman University since then. His research continues in the fields of Harpacticoida Taxonomy, Molecular Phylogeny, DNA Barcoding, and Determination of Species Boundaries.
